Up in Smoke
Legalizing marijuana in Washington State
April 9, 2012
On this edition of Northwest Now, a closer look at Initiative 502 - the push to make marijuana legal here in Washington State. The state's Office of Financial Management estimates legalizing and taxing marijuana might put as much as $560 million into the state budget each year - significantly more than the state liquor monopoly. But law enforcement says it's not just about the money, there will be a violent fight for control of what will likely become a larger and more lucrative market for marijuana. For this program, we'll travel to a local dispensary, talk with Thurston County Sheriff John Snaza and former U.S. Attorney John McKay.
Producer's note: While Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna chose not to appear on Northwest Now, he has indeed stated that he opposes Initiative 502.
