Job Summary 

This temporary, grant-funded position is responsible for leading classroom activities as part of KBTC’s out-of-school time programs.  Activities target kids between the ages of 5 – 12 in underserved neighborhoods throughout Tacoma.  Leaders are responsible for leading class activities with PBS KIDS lesson plans to engage kids and provide a positive, encouraging educational experience that helps avoid learning loss during school breaks. Activities range in duration, as needed. 

 

Essential Duties

  • Lead special activities using PBS KIDS provided content
  • Prepare for daily activities
  • Supervise students at all times during program hours
  • Present activities in a fun and engaging manner that includes all children
  • Provide a nurturing, safe, and fun learning environment for students
  • Other duties as assigned

Special Conditions

  • Must pass a criminal history background check
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Reliable transportation to attend program site and KBTC Public Television

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience working with children in school or after-school setting
  • Interest in early childhood education and extended learning

 

Allowable Substitution

If necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by  Human Resources for comparability.       

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Elementary teaching certificate
  • Two years’ experience teaching in a classroom, out-of-school setting or camp environment

Work Environment 

Work is performed in office and classroom environments, as well as some outdoor activities. 

 

Mental/Physical Demands 

  • Work requires long periods of standing and sitting
  • Work is performed in a normal, temperature controlled office environment
  • Work is commonly performed outdoors in uncontrolled environments
  • Work in semi-open setting with frequent interruptions and background noise
  • Work directly with students and families
  • Work involves some interruptions and requirement to answer on demand questions by phone, in person, or electronically
  • Move up to 25 lbs. occasionally
  • Occasionally kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing
  • Occasional to frequent change in position from sedentary, standing, stooping and walking
  • Frequent oral and auditory communication with others
  • May occasionally be required to deal with distraught people
  • Requires communication ability necessary to understand instructions and recognize hazardous, unsafe or poisonous materials and/or products
  • Must recognize and appropriately react to one’s own immediate emotional responses to situations while maintaining a professional demeanor
