Ability Awareness
Now in its fifth year, KBTC’s award-winning Ability Awareness project is an ongoing partnership with Federal Way Public Schools that uses the power of public media to create opportunities for youth with disabilities to share their voices, experiences, and skills.
Through partnerships with the Employment Transition Program (ETP) and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) program, scholars explore career awareness, workplace and life skills, independent living, and media production. Whether sharing their experiences on the job, demonstrating skills, interviewing others, or stepping behind the camera, scholars have opportunities to tell stories, build skills, and bring their perspectives to public media.
In 2026, Ability Awareness received a NETA Public Media Award in the Education category for Educational Resources for the Classroom, recognizing the program’s work to use public media, education, and authentic representation to amplify scholar voices.
Behind every scholar is a community cheering them on. You can help us continue creating opportunities for youth with disabilities to share their stories. Give now.
